To top it all off – the Happy Video Game Nerd just recently released an excellent look at the trilogy (which you may view here).

Well, it has been a good couple of weeks. I dropped off the face of the earth for about 7 months in terms of video game collecting, however I think I made up for lost time in the past two weeks. Here is a sampling of what I have come across and added to my collection:

Super Noah’s Ark 3d (or Super 3d Noah’s Ark) (SNES)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (NES)

Super Adventure Island (SNES)

Little Ninja Brothers (NES)

Retrozone Powerpak (NES)

Adventures of Batman and Robin (Sega Genesis)

Sega Game Gear

All in all, a good couple of weeks and money well spent. Have any items you want to get rid of cheap and think I may be interested in? Feel free to leave a comment on this post. I collect items I pick up and do no resale (unless I happen to come across a lot full of duplicates). Then and only then will I resale, even then it is for barely nothing and no profit is made.

I thought it would be fun to do a quick post on scary/eerie/ghoulish games for Halloween.

My top ten would be (in no particular order)

Castlevania Chronicles (Playstation) - A Playstation re-release of Akumajō Dracula (悪魔城ドラキュラ Akumajō Dorakyura (which was only released in Japan for the Sharp X68000 computer) found its way into my family when I was 16. I really didn’t get to play the game much then, however once it was re-released on PSN a few years ago I made up for lost time. The game is a classic Castlevania game. You enter a castle and fight your way to a final battle with Dracula. This game is notable for its difficulty, however it is a very rewarding finish.

Resident Evil 5 (PS3 / XBox 360) – Resident Evil has long held its ground as one of the best horror genre games on the market. Resident Evil 5 brought with it the ability for two players to enjoy the action at the same time. Unfortunately, the split view could have been much improved as much of the screen is wasted. This feature, however annoying, actually enhances the fear factor (worth the trade I suppose?).

Friday the 13th (NES) – No game has proved to be more disappointing than this game in terms of an ending. The level of difficulty is INSANE. I’ve personally never been able to beat this game without a game genie (and if you can beat it without one, you are a god among men). What makes this game stand out in my memory is that you really became bored with the repetitive side-scrolling gameplay – ONLY to be scared to death when Jason comes randomly popping into the scene to kill you.

Sweet Home (NES)- I’ll admit, I’ve only played bits of this game due to the fan translations. I’ll go ahead and link you to the Happy Video Game Nerd and let him fill you in on this classic which inspired much of the survival horror genre.View Happy Video Game Nerd Sweet Home review at Retroaware

DeCap Attack (Sega Genesis) – The Genesis always pulled off the dark themed games. DeCap Attack was a walking pun on many levels (especially the character names). This game was a goofy platform based game. If you didn’t get a chance to check it out back in the day you still have a chance as it is included in “Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection” for PS3 and XBox 360.

Frankenstein (NES) – One of my favorite games as a child. To tell you the truth, I have no idea why. The game is somewhat tough. The graphics aren’t much to brag about. It follows the same storyline many other NES games had (woman is kidnapped, guy must go save her). I liked the music though. It wasn’t Castlevania level, or even Super Mario level. It fit the mood and stuck with you though.

Nosferatu (SNES) – My uncle bought this game around the time I was 11 or 12 – so I was pretty attracted to Vampire games. Now – combining the mechanics of Prince of Persia and the Vampire genre should have been a huge score. Back then it felt like it. Playing the game today shows it doesn’t really hold up to the tests of time. The music was great. The graphics were great. The opening segment was one of my favorites. The controls took away from all of those fine points.watch?v=UpytvE76yuM&feature=related

Demon’s Crest (SNES) – The Gargoyle Quest series is hands-down one of my favorites. From Gargoyle’s Quest on the Gameboy to part II on the NES – they provided a nice adventure stemming from a character from the Ghouls ‘n Ghost/ Ghosts ‘N Goblins series. What defined the SNES addition to the series was the attention to detail. Music, dark/contrasty graphics and nice controls provided a delightful experience. It is a shame this game went largely unnoticed during its time. It really was a great experience for the SNES.

Silent Hill (Playstation) - I’ll simply describe this one as a dark ride through hell which will mess with you psychologically. It doesn’t have the consistent action of Resident Evil – which makes it even more beautiful since it still reaches the fear factor without having to do so. I remember renting this one a lot back in the day and playing through it.

Shadowgate (NES) – This was a very eerie point and click game during its time. Full of puzzles, riddles, and ways to die – this game will keep you on your toes. Be prepared to die often.

Thanks to all of the uploaders at youtube. Your time spent creating the videos for these games is much appreciated. Thanks for showcasing these gems to a new generation.

Busy schedules have definitely hurt my chances of posting here. After sitting down with Chris Jeffries of the Video Game Pad we have come to the conclusion that it would be a fun experiment to do video reviews. Considering we’re both slammed, it made a lot of sense for us to both work together on the videos. Between us, we have close to 1000 video games in our combined collections. I definitely don’t see a lack for material!

I will post more on this as it develops.

It has been a pretty long period since I have posted (as I stopped in January). Life caught up to me pretty fast and unfortunately the blog had to be pushed aside. The last couple of weeks kind to my collection though – and a reason to post here at the Video Game View.

I’ve added a few titles such as WWF Raw, Sunset Riders, and Aero the Acrobat for SNES, Incredible Hulk, Sonic 3, Jungle Book, Chiki Chiki Boys for Sega Genesis, and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Tom and Jerry, Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde for NES.

The absolute gem of a find for me lately has been one that I found today while visiting The Video Game Exchange in Wytheville. I picked up a copy of “Revenge of Shinobi” for Sega Genesis which included the box. Although I already own the game (on the Sega 6-Pack), it was worth the “risk of investment”. Why so? Because it ended up being software version 1.0 of the game. That’s right folks, I now own a copy of Shinobi with all of the original bosses (Batman, Spiderman, Godzilla, Terminator/Hulk and even the Rambo flame-throwers).

I hope everyone’s adventures in collecting are going well. Mine have slowed down considerably, however I am far from finished = ).
