Gargoyle’s Quest
The fall Hillsville Gun Show & Flea Market has come and gone – with that I was fortunate to make a few purchases. One of those just happened to be the precursor to one of my favorite SNES games (Demon’s Crest) – Gargoyle’s Quest for the Gameboy.
The game revolves around the character Firebrand, a gargoyle who the player learns is predestined to be the “Red Blaze” who will save the realm from the wrath of the evil King Breager. Interestingly enough, one may recognize Firebrand as an enemy from the series Ghost’s ‘n Goblins.
Gargoyle’s Quest is an interesting mix of video game staples – both RPG elements and side-scroll battles. As you venture across the towns you are placed in a familiar RPG top-down angle. While venturing from place to place you can also encounter battles.
The RPG portion isn’t the whole game though as you will find some stages where the game switches to a side-scrolling adventure. Equipped only with a flame and the ability to stick to walls and hover momentarily, the player must set out to reach the end of the level and defeat the boss located at the end. As you progress through the game you are able to obtain new power-ups and abilities that allows you to level up. This proves useful for going back to stages were there were areas that were previously unreachable.
This is a very fun title and a great start to a trilogy (Gargoyle’s Quest, Gargoyle’s Quest II, and Demon’s Crest). If you have an old GameBoy gathering dust then you should definitely look for a copy of this game and try it out!
